If you have not yet booked your horse’s spring vaccinations, we would like to encourage all of you to start thinking about your equine wellness and health care needs for the year. We would suggest getting started well before show season begins, to avoid any vaccine related stiffness or sore necks. We have many stables that have started to vaccinate in March and early April for this reason.
Core Vaccines
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) recommends a number of core vaccines that they strongly recommend all horses should be protected with. These include vaccines against:
Tetanus
Rabies
West Nile Virus
Eastern/Western Equine Encephalitis
Risk-based Vaccines
These vaccines are considered elective and optional vaccines depending on the horse's exposure or potential risk to these pathogens. Talk with your herd health veterinarian about your horses’ individual needs for these vaccines.
Equine Influenza
Equine Herpes (“Rhino”)
Strangles
Potomac Horse Fever
Botulism
2022 Equine Vaccine Options and Recommendations:
A thorough description of the equine diseases which can be prevented by vaccination is included in a lower section of this document. Please ask our veterinarians for their recommendations if you are unsure which vaccinations are best for your horse. You can also use the chart below to help you learn what each vaccine we offer is protective against.
Vaccine Recommendations for 2022
In 2022, for most horses, we are recommending clients consider administering:
Vetera Gold XP (Tetanus, West Nile, EEE/WEE, Flu/Rhino)
Potomavac + Imrab (Potomac Horse Fever, Rabies)
The combination of these two vaccines will provide the best protection against the diseases most likely to be encountered by horses in southwestern Ontario. The Vetera Gold XP vaccine offers superior protection against the most current strains of Equine Influenza Virus.
We still continue to recommend CoreEQ Innovator(Rabies, Tetanus, West Nile, EEE/WEE) for those clients who do not need to include Flu/Rhino and Potomac Horse Fever in their horse’s vaccine program.
